5 Tips on Social Media Strategy that No One Wants to Hear

Create it. Strategy is a necessity. And creating a separate goal for EACH account is smart. A goal for Facebook may not be the same for Twitter. The audiences are different. You have to be invested in each account you create. What is your main goal? To sell? To educate? To vent? To spy on friends? Who is your audience? Why would they want to read what you have to say? How will your posts be different from the other millions of posts written each day?

Simplify it. It’s overwhelming to think about managing all of your accounts every day. Before you outsource the burden to a ghost writer, think through how you can still implement your strategy but perhaps on a more manageable scale. Post a few times a week versus every 5 minutes. If you are good at what you do, quality counts just as much as how often your brand is flashed in someone’s face (if not more). Remember – you’re in print. Reputation is important.

Do it. It’s not worth the time invested in creating a strategy if you can’t implement it. Keep the tasks in your strategy minimal so it is easy to do. Carve 15 minutes out of your work day to post something important that you have been working on – and be sure you use tools that link all of your Social Media accounts together so you only have to post once.

Don’t do it. There are companies getting rid of their websites and turning to Social Media sites only. Not a good idea. Remember, it is just ONE tool of many in which to assist with your communication efforts. Do not depend on Social Media to be the end all solution to your efforts. Mix it into your overall MarCom strategy.

Don’t lose it. As we experience every day, companies can go out of business at a moment’s notice. If the lights go out for any of the companies supporting your Social Media strategies, you don’t want to lose all of the data in your accounts. Have 12,345 followers on Twitter? 674 fans on Facebook? 36 videos on YouTube? Before you lose all of your followers, be sure to create your own cross promotional campaigns that allow you to maintain contact info on your own – and keep backed up folders of what you posted – pictures, videos, events, papers, etc.

Life. Embrace it. Own it. Live it.
